Drug Allergy

What Is a Drug Allergy?

A drug allergy may manifest itself through a variety of symptoms, based on the type of drug or physical condition of the individual. Drug allergies are fairly common, though some of the symptoms can be quite serious when left untreated. If you know you have a drug allergy, it is important to inform your doctor before taking any prescribed medications. If you are unsure as to whether or not you have a drug allergy, Dr. Atul Shah of the Center for Asthma & Allergy can determine which medications you may be allergic to, and help you avoid these drugs or design a course of treatment to combat any adverse effects.

Some common symptoms of drug allergies include rash, itching, swelling, angioedema, urticaria and wheezing. Most drug allergies respond quickly to treatment, so calling your doctor is the best action to take if you believe you are experiencing symptoms of a drug allergy. Remember, though, that some drug allergies can cause anaphylaxis, which is a serious, life-threatening reaction, and should be treated immediately.

There is no definitive way to prevent the development of a drug allergy, but those with drug allergies can take care to avoid the trigger medication. Seeing an allergist can help you determine whether or not you’re suffering from a drug allergy.
